Obedient and curious animals
Domestic rabbits have a well-developed brain and quickly adapt to life at home. The cage for them becomes personal territory, and the small house or box in which the nest is located is an analogue of the rabbit hole.
Occasionally, individuals with an aggressive character are also found, trying in any way to protect themselves and their territory. It is undesirable to immediately take such rabbits in your arms, but it is better to establish sound contact with them first. Next, we will talk about how to train a rabbit at home, making him kind and complaisant.
Be sure to accustom the horror to the name
Create a nickname for your pet. It is desirable that it consists of two syllables, and includes whistling and hissing sounds. Start talking with the animal, calling him by name.
It is advisable to pronounce the nickname in a certain tonality characteristic of you. The animal will quickly begin to respond to such sounds and will listen to the words you pronounce.
Notice in which corner of the cage the animal is meeting its natural needs and place the cat tray in it. Pour some sawdust, straw or a special filler into it.
Place rabbit excrement and wet filler in the tray every morning and evening. Periodically seat the pet on the tray, repeating the same command. You can say: "Bob, a tray" or "Senya, to the toilet." Read more in the article "How to train a rabbit to a tray."
You will be able to teach the rabbit to go to the tray very quickly, since smart animals themselves are neat and prefer to go to the toilet in one particular place.
Establish contact and understanding
Now about whether it is possible to take a pet in your arms right after the acquisition, and how it will react to it. We’ll say right away that it’s possible, but it can threaten you with certain troubles in the future.
When changing the place of residence, the rabbit is experiencing serious stress, and taking the animal in your arms you only reinforce it. The taming of the animal should be preceded by the process of its getting used to the owner. This may take several days, but it is fully justified if you plan to start training the animal in various teams.
In rabbits, frontal vision is very poorly developed, so if the animal constantly turns its head to one side, looking at you, then this is the first sign of interest and attention.
Starting communication with the animal, try to keep your face at about the same level with him. Then the animal is easier to establish contact with you, and the training of the rabbit is much faster and more successful.
Introducing the beast with the hands of the owner
In most cases, animals accustomed to the tray and responding to the name after a few days begin to follow with interest the owner, who puts food into the cage and removes it.
To train a rabbit in your hands, choose a time when your pet feels completely calm and makes movements in your direction with the sounds of his own name.
Bring a hand to it, which should be below the eye level of the animal. The animal will immediately try to gnaw your fingers. Do not be alarmed, this way the rabbits get acquainted with the outside world.
Encourage the animal by giving him a slice of white cracker, a leaf of succulent grass, or another treat he really likes.
In no case do not use refined sugar and other sweets for this, which are harmful to the digestion of the pet and can lead to his death.
Conduct training exclusively with affection
When the animal completes the study of your hand, you can try to gently pat it on the head and scratch behind the ear. Do not give him a treat. Otherwise, the pet will get used to it and will not let you in without encouragement.
Some aggressive animals (especially if you have already acquired an adult rabbit) may begin to bite actively. How to teach the animal to react calmly to your touch, read the article "How to wean a rabbit to bite."
Reinforce all your actions with specific commands spoken in the same sound key. Never hit the animal. Rabbits are very shy and will quickly remember your aggressiveness. In the future, they may not come to you at all or constantly bite your hands.
Next, we will talk about how to tame a decorative rabbit in your hands, and how to make it execute elementary commands. Remember that not all breeds lend themselves to training, so you need to carefully choose the pet that is suitable for these purposes.
The best breeds for training
Of the rabbits of industrial breeds, Belgian flanders are best suited for training. They are large, very lazy, but good-natured and enjoy contact with the owners.
They especially love children who easily manage how to train rabbits and use them as a living soft toy. However, due to their large size, flanders are not very suitable for keeping in small apartments and are replaced by dwarf animals.
The most common dwarf rabbit breeds include:
- Dutch two-tone;
- dwarf butterflies;
- dwarf rex;
These animals have a gentle constitution and are extremely dependent on the owners, which are treated with undisguised sympathy.
We teach ourselves to come to our hands
As soon as the animal ceases to be nervous and begins to calmly respond to your hand, proceed to the next stage of taming the pet.
Sit on the floor in front of the animal. This will cause a lively interest in the animal. Extend a hand towards him, laying it at the bottom of the cage, palm up, right in front of his muzzle. The rabbit most often climbs on his hand and tries to get comfortable on it without taking his eyes off the owner.
After this, the animal can be raised and picked up. In order not to frighten the rabbit, you need to do this slowly, while affectionately calling him by name. Encourage him for his calm behavior. Be sure to pet the back and top of the head. You can read more about this in the article “How to take rabbits in your arms”.
At first, try not to hold the rabbit in your arms for too long. In the future, you can start to carry the animal around the apartment, showing him its attractions. Be sure to talk with your pet and make sure that he is most interested.
Training Basics and Leash Training
After you have established full contact with the pet and accustomed it to hands, you can begin to train and teach the animal elementary commands. This will not only brighten up your time, but also give pleasure to the animal, which is very flattered by the attention of the owner.
There are many tips on how to train a decorative rabbit, but a prerequisite for such a process is to encourage the animal that performed this or that command.
Start by teaching him to leash and walk. First show the rabbit this item and let him get to know him, tasting it. If the pet is fond of, then use the team that you used to stop him from biting.
As soon as the animal begins to calmly react to the leash, then try to put it on, while securing everything with the selected team (for example, “Walk”) and a piece of goodies.
At first, do not put on a leash for a long time and try to walk with your pet around the apartment. In the future, you can start walking along the street, sometimes taking off the leash and making sure that the pet responds to your voice without going far. Elementary Tricks Training
Training a rabbit entirely trusting you in elementary tricks is usually not difficult. These activities are fun for both and should be conducted in a relaxed atmosphere.
Tricks are best taught to young animals who have reached the age of 2-3 months. Bunnies study well, remembering teams during the game. But training can be done with adults.
You can independently invent tricks and conduct training gradually moving from simple to complex actions. Immediately determine the list of commands that should not sound like one another.
Make an action plan by extending the time intervals between individual classes, and gradually reducing the number of rewards. So that your pet does not lose already acquired skills, try not to interrupt classes, which will soon yield the expected results.
Simple stance and ball game
Start by teaching the decorative rabbit how to do the stand. Hold his favorite treat above the head of the animal and pronounce the chosen command. For example: "Maxik, up." Encourage your pet only when it rises on its feet.
In the future, increase the height by which you raise a treat, but not higher than the height comfortable for the animal. After a while, the rabbit will stand on its own, only after hearing the correct command.
It’s also easy to teach a rabbit to play ball. To do this, put a piece of goodies under a small ball in front of the animal. To take possession of it, the animal will certainly push the object from its place. In this case, use any of the teams you have invented and additionally encourage the animal.
It will take a little time, and your pet will be happy to start playing with this and any other round objects.
