You probably recently bought your first rabbit, and maybe you already have one, but you would like to know more about these animals in order to better understand them and to avoid serious problems in the future.
Immediately make a reservation, it is better to keep a rabbit in the house, and not in the yard. These animals are very intelligent, sociable, in need of attention, they can become a great company, if, of course, they find mutual understanding with their human family.

Advantages of sterilized and neutered rabbits.
And although the majority of rabbits go to a special tray, their hormones can help ensure that males that are not castrated and sterilized do not begin to mark their territory. Sterilization and castration of your pet will allow him to get used to the toilet more quickly, reduce the possibility of aggression of the “owner of the territory”, reduce the need to gnaw around objects, and also extend the life of the rabbit. The rabbit should be neutered at the age of three and a half months to six months, depending on the degree of puberty. However, each operation is a known risk, and therefore should be performed by an experienced specialist – a veterinarian with skills in working with rabbits. Animals older than 2 years old must undergo a special veterinary examination before surgery.
Perhaps the free keeping of the rabbit in the living room. Still, it’s better, and sometimes even just necessary, to start with a cell. In it, the rabbit gets used to a special toilet much faster. After he learns to relieve his need in one place, you can give the animal a little freedom. Now you need to install one or several toilets (can be feline) in the corners of the room where your rabbit runs. Never punish a rabbit in your life!
Protection is necessary for all rabbits, this is part of what you gain with the purchase of a new pet. Rabbits love to chew on bedspreads, furniture, rugs, wiring and all other wires. Therefore, all wires must be removed so that the animal could not get to them! Give him alternative safe objects for gnawing (you can toys) to distract him from damage to wires and household items. Rabbits under the age of one year more than adults need such entertainment.
Rabbit Relationships with Other Pets
Domestic rabbits get along well with domestic cats, and they also get on well with well-bred dogs. The latter must be trained in special teams before being entrusted with a rabbit freely walking around the apartment. But you still need constant supervision in order to control dog games (especially for puppies). Sharing of the next rabbit is painless, provided that they are sterilized / neutered to an individual of different sexes. They introduce them to each other in a territory not familiar to both. The most important diseases
Due to the fact that the rabbits constantly wash themselves, their fur can stray into small lumps, which subsequently fall into their mouths. Unlike cats, these animals do not have a gag reflex, and these lumps, getting into the stomach of a rabbit, can then lead to an absolute obstruction of the intestine. In case of loss of appetite and a decrease in the size of stool balls, be sure to consult a veterinarian. In addition, similar symptoms can be a sign of another dangerous disease, known as Gastrointestinal stasis.
Disease prevention: keep the rabbit clean, let it move freely for at least thirty hours a week, give it a handful of fresh hay, fresh vegetables daily, in accordance with the general diet.
Bacterial balance: The rabbit has a number of beneficial bacteria in its intestines. If the normal bacterial balance is upset due to stale food or a sharp change in feed, harmful bacteria may well prevail and lead to death.
Prevention: Keep all feed in a cool place, change feed gradually, giving new foods in small portions. If there are no signs of the disorder (rumbling in the abdomen, diarrhea, or metabolism) during the day, you can continue to give a new product. If the pet moves freely around the apartment and the plot, it must be ensured that he does not get to poisonous plants and fertilizers.
Infectious bacteria: Most rabbit diseases are caused not by viruses, but by bacteria, so they can be treated with antibiotics. If your rabbit has colds, take him to a veterinarian who is familiar with rabbit-friendly antibiotics.
In advance you need to find an experienced veterinarian who works with rabbits (before the problem). If the rabbit has been attacked by a predator, then show it to any veterinarian. After the procedure, keep the animal in a cool place, next to ice or a wet towel.
Systematically check your eyes, ears, teeth, nose, appetite, weight and feces.
- Sudden loss of appetite, accompanied by gurgling in the abdomen and bloating.
- Loss of appetite and heavy breathing.
- Loss of appetite and runny nose.
- The animal shakes its head.
- Urinary incontinence (it is visible on the inside of the paws).
- Abscesses, tumors in various places of the rabbit’s body.
- Any sudden change in behavior.
