Dwarf rabbits are excellent pets that do not require special care, are unpretentious in food and maintenance. Start them for beauty, to amuse children, to find a little furry friend. Some owners even try to train rabbits. Dozens of breeds of these pets have been bred, but let’s first get acquainted with the rules for the care and feeding of animals. After all, the life expectancy of rabbits depends on the normal content.
Before buying a dwarf rabbit, think about where you will keep it. There are two options – an aviary and a cage. An aviary is made with an area of more than two meters, so that it can be equipped only in a large apartment. A cage is bought at least 70 cm long and 40 cm wide. The size of the home directly depends on how big the animal settles in it.
Rabbit in the aviary
The enclosure is equipped in a corner where enough light enters, but not under the window itself. Direct sunlight is harmful to the rabbit. They enclose it with a net, they necessarily attach a door to let the pet go for a walk. The floor is lined with a rug, dwarf rabbits are contraindicated to sit on plastic or laminate.
In one corner they put a tray, the animal quickly learns to walk on it. In the opposite corner make a "dining room". Stock up for your pet with a drinking bowl, a manger for hay, a bowl for grains and juicy food. In the aviary, be sure to make a small house where the furry animal will hide. We must not forget about the toys – the wheel, tunnels, which are very fond of rabbits. You can find out how to equip an aviary according to the rules by reading photos and video materials.
Rabbit in a cage
A closed cage is bought for growth, because a rabbit appears in the house a tiny one and a half month old. The size of the house should be at least four times the size of the pet itself. The bottom of the cell is solid. The paws of decorative animals are delicate, they will easily hurt them on a grid or net. Lining the bottom with straw or sawdust. At one end of the cage, a manger for hay, a drinking bowl and a food bowl are placed. At the other end, a tray is equipped. It can be put a little later, when the rabbit itself chooses a place for the toilet.
In a cage, even a small one, they make shelter or put up a small house. Rabbits like to hide from everyone from time to time. If they do not have a suitable place, they can become depressed, lose their appetite, lose weight. Be sure to put a wheel, a ladder, a small tunnel in the cage so that the pets can play. Low physical activity is bad for health, as rabbits are active animals.
Caring for a dwarf domestic rabbit is simple. But he is a living creature, so it takes time and attention. Some people think that rabbits smell bad. This happens if you do not clean the cage and the tray in time. Cleaning in the aviary is carried out once every seven days, the tray is changed 2-3 times a week. A closed rabbit cage should be cleaned more often, once every 3-4 days. Problems with smell arise if a male lives in the house. His urine really stinks a lot. For this, the "boys" are castrated at an early age. They become calm, do not fight, and the smell of tags disappears.
Every day you have to walk the rabbit in the apartment. At the same time, they make sure that the animal does not get small objects, wires and cables, other things that he wants to gnaw on the way. It is best to enclose the place for a walk with a barrier or net. It is worth playing with a rabbit in the evenings, during the day the animals sleep, you do not need to touch them. The rabbits are also taken out onto the street. For walking, buy a special harness.
Feeding Dwarf Rabbits
Breeds of dwarf rabbits
If you have learned the maintenance and care, you can proceed to the choice of breed. Types of dwarf domestic rabbits are very diverse. There are shorthair and long-haired, white and colored. The weight of the animals ranges from 700 grams to 3 kilograms. They differ in activity and even intelligence. Here are the most popular dwarf rabbit breeds that we sell:
- Rabbit ram
- Angora dwarf
- Dwarf rex
- Japanese dwarf
- Dutch dwarf
- Colored dwarf rabbit
- Fox dwarf rabbit
Each breed is special, it has its advantages and disadvantages. How many do not choose, all the same there will be doubts. Most owners make a choice, guided by the beauty of the animal, ease of maintenance, size, how much animals eat. Life expectancy also matters, because I do not want to quickly lose my best friend. Below is a detailed description of some breeds.
The lop-eared cute ram rabbit got its name from its broad-headed head. This species is Dutch, bred in Holland in the middle of the last century. A distinctive feature of the breed is hanging ears with a fleshy base. Shorthair and long-haired individuals are found. Color – gray in different shades, spotted, Thuringian. Basic breed standards:
- The body is cylindrical with a rounded back
- The neck is short, inconspicuous
- The head is large, with a wide forehead.
- The eyes are large, expressive and beautiful.
- Ears hang down, their length is 15-20 cm
- Forelegs are short
- The tail fits snugly
- Weight – 1-2 kg.
Keep the animal in a cage 60 × 80 × 50 cm or in a spacious aviary. It does not tolerate heat, because the temperature in the room should not exceed 25 degrees, do not place the cage in a draft. Standard feeding – hay, grain and vegetables. Long-haired rabbits need to be combed at least once a week, periodically the animal is trimmed with claws. How to do this, it is better to find out from the veterinarian.
There is a long-haired and short-haired dwarf rabbit of the Angora breed. In long-haired, hair length reaches 20 cm, the fur is soft, it is very pleasant to iron it. Outwardly, the animals resemble fluffy balls, this can be easily seen by looking at the photo. They have one drawback – the wool easily falls into tangles. Therefore, comb the rabbit should be no less than once every five days. And during molting – daily or every other day. Some owners have an allergy to fluff. Then the rabbit will have to give someone.
Angora shorthair dwarf rabbit is not so whimsical to care for, it is combed every 2-3 weeks. The color of the rabbits of both subspecies is white. Eyes are red, blue is rare. Animals weigh 1-1.6 kg. The body of the rabbit is compact, the back is rounded. The head is small, the ears are erect, short, up to five centimeters. There are pretty brushes on the tips. If you do not take into account combing, caring for the Angora breed is simple. They are sensitive to high temperatures, like all fluffy animals, but unpretentious in food.
Germelin or the Polish rabbit is a white animal with a very pretty face. In appearance, it resembles a plush toy. The breed was obtained by crossing albinos with wild, silver and Dutch rabbits. Any color of wool, except white, is considered a defect, the individual is rejected. Standard parameters are as follows:
- The body is compact, without a pronounced neck
- The head is short and large.
- The ears stand straight, are located close to each other, are covered with wool, the average length is 5.5 cm (fluctuations from 4.3 cm to 7 cm).
- Blue or red eyes
- Paws are short
- Weight – 0.8-1.5 kg.
Hermeline should be kept in a clean cage or aviary. They tolerate cold well, but do not like heat and dampness, they are sensitive to drafts. In food, the animals are unpretentious. In winter and autumn, they should be given vitamin D and calcium to avoid rickets, osteoporosis. Rabbits must be combed once a week, tangled wool is carefully cut with scissors. The Polish rabbit is resistant to many diseases, vaccinate it against especially dangerous infections.
Dwarf rex is a very calm and independent rabbit, its nature does not require constant communication. Ideal for busy people. His coat is short, of a rare brown color, reminiscent of beaver fur. When stroking, the hairs always return to their place, even if you pet the animal against the hair. Another distinctive feature of the breed is a mild curved mustache. Here are the main parameters of Rex:
- The body is cylindrical, stocky
- The neck is short, the head is large
- Breast wide, without breast
- Paws and tail are short
- Weight – 0.6-1.7 kg.
Thanks to the short hair, the care of the rabbit is simplified, it does not need to be combed constantly. A cell is bought with an area of at least 0.3 sq.m. Feeders and drinking containers are closed, animals are not too neat in food. Rabbits eat the usual food – dry hay, vegetables and root crops, dried and fresh fruits, twigs. Remove the cell should be at least once every three days, periodically disinfected. As soon as an unpleasant odor appears, clean the tray.
Japanese dwarf rabbits are a beautiful but unstable breed of rabbits. They have a magnificent spotty color. Spots and stripes are symmetrically located throughout the body. The photo shows that, first of all, the back of the body, the lateral surfaces of the head are painted. On the one hand, the suit is dark, and on the other a light, yellowish hue. The rest of the coat is white. Unfortunately, when crossing rabbits, these qualities are often lost.
The Japanese are playful and active. It is better to keep them in an aviary than in a cage, regularly letting them out for a walk around the house. Rabbits are caring mothers, because the breed is easy to breed. In food, animals are unpretentious, willingly gnaw twigs, hay from meadow herbs, root crops. Resistant to disease, but poorly tolerate drafts and temperature extremes. Growing animals at home is not so difficult.
Why did rabbits get the strange names "lion-headed"? This is due to a special type of growth of their coat. Near the muzzle it is long, hairs reach five centimeters. On the rest of the body, the fur is meek and smooth. Thus, a “lion’s mane” is formed around the head. The structure of the fur is soft, fluffy and pleasant to the touch. Any color, from white and red to dark gray and black, has more than 60 colors. The main parameters of the breed:
- Chunky body, medium-long hair
- The head sits on a short neck
- Ears are erect, about 5 cm long
- Eyes are large, bright, color depends on coat color
- The weight of an adult rabbit is 0.7-1.4 kg.
The Dutch or Dutch dwarf rabbit is a subspecies of its large brother. It differs from it only in size. What is so special about this breed that makes it so remarkable? Dutch rabbits have an original color. The back of the body, the ears, the circles around the eyes are dark, the legs and the rest of the body are white. The color of the rabbits is different, there are black, blue, chocolate, brown, scorched, squirrel color spots. The animal looks like this:
- The body is short and round.
- The head is large, relative to their size
- The eyes are expressive, large
- Ears are short, erect
- Forelegs are short
- Weight – from 500 g to 1.5 kg.
It’s easy to take care of the Dutch at home. They can be kept in small cages or medium-sized cages. The rabbits are friendly, play well with children. Thanks to the original color and calm nature, you can boast of all the joint photos. Breeding rabbits is also promising. They mate well, females are prolific, feed their rabbits for a long time.
Colored dwarf rabbit
Bred this breed on the basis of hermeline. Her appearance is similar to Polish rabbits. The only difference is the variety of colors. To date, about twenty shades of animal hair are known. Therefore, they received such a name. The main parameters of the breed:
- Short, sturdy body with a short neck
- The back is tight, large
- Compact head
- Ears up to 5.5 cm, closely set, erect
- Eyes are big, different colors
- Paws and tail are short
- Adult rabbit weight – 1-1.5 kg
The nature of the females is calm and flexible, but the males are quite aggressive. When the rabbit has a hunt (this happens in the second year of life), he attacks the owner, bites, behaves extremely restlessly. If you do not plan to breed, it is worth castrating the male. Otherwise, there are no problems with this breed. Dwarf rabbits are well adapted for living in an apartment, unpretentious to food, like cleanliness and good company. You can keep them both in a cage and in an aviary.
