Rabbit meat is extremely beneficial – each of us knows this truth. Rabbit is absolutely environmentally friendly, because the animal until the age of 7 months does not accumulate any harmful substances, and is very nutritious. It is indicated for gastrointestinal diseases, heart diseases, allergic reactions. The undoubted advantage of rabbit meat is that it contains many times less cholesterol than its "sisters" – veal and other types of meat. It is completely absorbed by the body and is indicated for use by both aged people and children and nursing mothers.
Given the cost of meat in the modern market, it will be much more efficient to purchase a pair and breed them (if you already have a home farm, rabbits must be on it!) In the household they will become indispensable help both financially and in nutrition plan. So, how to properly care for rabbits? In fact, caring for rabbits is not so burdensome – the main thing is to know the basic rules of this care and take care of these cute eared ears.
Movement is life
To begin with, animals need movement – if you give them this movement, they will feel much better, because mobility improves the digestion of food, and spacious cells do not allow animals to breathe dung fumes. Therefore, they must be kept in spacious enclosures that will not force them to sit motionless in cramped conditions.
Floors in enclosures, which, incidentally, are easy to build on their own, ideally should be wooden, but you can do half mesh. Continuous mesh floors, according to scientists, are harmful to rabbits, because nocturnal feces, which animals eat, are streaming through the holes. If you deprive them of this "delicacy", in which nutrients are held in large quantities, they may begin to have health problems. But we need healthy rabbits in the household!
You should be aware that intestinal motility in rabbits is simply absent, therefore they chew constantly, pushing the food available in the intestine with a new portion. Domestic animals should constantly have oats in aviaries, poured into special feeders. Many of them prefer combined feed to oats, but do not get carried away with it and try to give as needed – for example, in winter, but not as a main meal. Compound feed can be fed dry, or can be soaked in cold water (most importantly, not hot, so that the dish does not lose all the useful trace elements). The animals are fed not only rabbit, but also veal mixed fodder, but pork does not suit them in any way – the animals breed poorly, and their meat takes on a red hue.
Salt must be included in the diet of rabbits at home, so the food should be salted during breeding with liquid. They also need water – they constantly drink, therefore always watch for the presence of water in the aviary. Even if you give them succulent food, the water in the animals must be in the right amount. In winter, many breeders give their pets snow, because the water is covered with a crust of ice during frosts.
As you know, a lack of iodine in the body of a rabbit is very negative for broods, so it is recommended that babies add iodinol to water to prevent various intestinal diseases. It should be noted that iodinol should not be replaced with iodine tincture – iodine should be used only externally.
Rabbits like to hone their incisors (teeth growing is fraught with injuries), therefore it is impossible to deprive them of this necessary procedure. It is recommended that tree branches (both deciduous and fruit trees with the exception of plums) and brooms be given to “eat”. The highest quality are obtained from oak and birch.
How to feed domestic rabbits?
Proper feeding of domestic rabbits is necessary for their health, because it is no secret that these animals are extremely susceptible to what they eat. The diet should consist of balanced "dishes", rich in nutrients in the composition – that is, feed, fresh hay, greens, as well as fruits, vegetables, cereals (oats, wheat, etc.). In fact, rabbits, like rodents, eat almost everything. And, given that they constantly produce gastric juice, rabbits should not sit hungry – they must always have water and fresh hay in their cage.
With the advent of spring, rabbits begin to need fresh grass, so grass should be collected for them. But be sure to collect in areas remote from engine exhaust. Alfalfa, dandelion, clover are suitable for rabbits.
Eating rabbits at home involves food. The rabbit food needs to be given special attention – buy only special food intended for these furry animals, and make sure that the label says "granular grass" – this food is less dangerous for rabbits than cereal. However, one cannot get carried away and constantly feed him an animal – rabbits are accustomed to eating juicy grass, therefore a feed containing a "dose" of micronutrients and vitamins many times higher than the norm can only do harm. Skillfully combine food with other types of food.
As you know, rabbits are quite vulnerable to disease, therefore, they need vaccination against a viral disease – myxomatosis, which is susceptible not only to domestic rabbits, but also to wild ones. It is important to choose the right manufacturer: according to experts, the Polish vaccine is of the highest quality, the Russian one is of the lowest quality. Rabbits who suffer from a mild form of myxomatosis after vaccination result in healthy young animals, but those who have suffered a severe illness are unsuitable for reproduction.
Also, rabbit breeders often encounter an ear mite – both domestic rabbits and wild animals also suffer from it. If previously used turpentine, diluted with vegetable oil, for local processing, the modern market offers a more effective solution to the problem – entomozan, neostomozan, etc. It is used simply – the ampoule is diluted in a plastic liter bottle. After treating the ears of rabbits, the solution can be stored for a month in a cool place.
Keep in mind some tips:
- Males and females, having reached the age of three months, can already begin to breed, so if you do not want to breed offspring, transplant them into different cells.
- The female is able to bear more than 20 fruits in 6 years for a year.
- Skins are in great demand.
Be sure to think about which breed of rabbits in the household is preferable for you before buying them, because the nature of your future business depends on it. For example, Californian males and white New Zealand rabbits give an early maturity, which reaches the size of adult animals in just 4 months (although for this reason they are prone to obesity). However, for effective mating, rabbit breeds must be clean. The female can be used up to 7 years of age. She brings the best offspring in 3-4 years.
Before mating rabbits, take care of their preliminary examination – they must be healthy, no rashes or other disturbing factors. However, if you carefully care for them, such phenomena should not be. If you notice a malaise in the animal, animals should not be hurt. Also, one should not happen to a female who ate her brood last time. Keep track of the mass – too thin or thick individuals to mating is not recommended.
Rabbits are suitable for mating at home at the age of 3-4 months. It is better to happen to males at the age of 4-5 months, and females – at all at 8 months. In this case, the weight of the female should not be less than 2.5 kg.
Mating of rabbits in greenhouse, domestic conditions occurs at any time of the year, as the female estrus repeats every 10 days in the cold (every week in the warm) and lasts about 4 days.
First, the female needs to be transplanted into the cage to the male so that he does not feel uncomfortable in someone else’s territory. Do not put any foreign objects in the cage, so as not to interfere with the pair, remove the drinking bowls, feeders and be sure to clean the cage. Do not leave animals for mating for a day – watch the mating process. In fact, in 5 minutes it is able to cover the female several times, so a long stay in the cell is not needed.
How to determine that a "done"? A contented animal with a low rumbling falls on its side. Fertilization occurs within 24 hours after mating.
In this article, we talked about the nuances of grooming and breeding. In essence, courtship is not such a complicated procedure if one knows the theory of this science well. Over time, practice will make you a professional in this field.
